Fort d’une carrière menée avec une intégrité sans faille depuis plus de trente ans, Stéphan Oliva compte parmi ces rares pianistes dont on peut dire qu’ils ont plus qu’un style : un univers. Hautement personnel, son jeu tour à tour mystérieux ou anguleux recèle en lui tout un monde intime peuplé de fantômes et de souvenirs, un imaginaire non seulement musical (Paul Bley, Ran Blake, Paul Motian…), mais encore littéraire et cinématographique (Paul Auster, Jean-Luc Godard, Alfred Hitchcock…).

Le trio est né de son association avec l’intrépide Sébastien Boisseau, l’un des contrebassistes les plus actifs de la scène européenne, qui cosigne avec lui un répertoire d’une étonnante originalité.

Ils ont choisi d’inviter Tom Rainey batteur incontournable de l’effervescente scène jazz new-yorkaise aussi à l’aise dans le jazz straight ahead que dans les groupes de Tim Berne ou Marc Ducret.

Oliva, Boisseau et Rainey, connaissent les échanges triangulaires qui ont jalonné leurs parcours. Ils ont joué avec différents maitres du trio piano-basse-batterie tels que Paul Motian, Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, Joachim Kühn …

Une musique nocturne et poétique, dont l’énergie cinétique n’en finit pas d’envoûter.

Après plusieurs tournées en 2016 et 2017, le trio a enregistré son 1er disque dans le magnifique Studio La Buissonne en juillet 2018.

En 2022 Orbit est retourné en studio lors de sa dernière tournée pour produire son deuxième album qui sortira le 03 février 2023 sur le label Yolk Records.
Le parcours de ce trio se poursuit avec une prochaine tournée prévue en octobre 2023.

Stephan Oliva, Tom Rainey and Sébastien Boisseau have played in trio with Paul Motian, Fred Hersch or Joachim Kühn, here they are gathered to form ORBIT.

Stéphan Oliva made his great comeback to the trio’s formula that propelled him to the forefront of the scene in the 1990s and 2000s.

In collaboration with Sébastien Boisseau, one of the most active double bass players on the European scene, they chose to invite Tom Rainey, a renowned drummer on the lively New York jazz scene.

Oliva, Boisseau and Rainey are familiar with the triangular exchanges that have marked their paths. They have played with different masters of the piano-bass drum trio such as Paul Motian, Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, Joachim Kühn…

It is therefore not surprising that these three most experienced musicians choose the queen formula of jazz orchestras to combine and share their experiences, their conceptions of sound, dreams, power or drama.

After several tours in 2016 and 2017 the trio recorded their self-titled debut album in July 2018 in the beautiful studio « La Buissonne ».
An album praised by the media that received numerous awards. The tours that followed confirmed the enthusiastic reaction of the public for this record that has achieved excellent sales.

The trio returned to the studio during their last tour in May 2022 to produce their second album which will be released in February 2023 on the Yolk Records label.
The journey of this trio, which from the beginning intended to be a long term one, continues with a next tour scheduled for October 2023. Not to be missed!
